One of the most common methods used to separate metals with low-alloy and low-carbon properties is the gas cutting method using acetylene-oxygen torches. The cutting cycle of the metal material is based on bringing it to a suitable temperature, whereby, in combination with close contact with the torch, the material burns and escapes, taking the form of metal oxide. Such an effect is only possible if properly designed burners are used, allowing oxygen to be mixed with the correct proportions of the flammable gas. The most commonly used materials for flammable gases are primarily acetylene and propane-butane.

Certificate 

Upon successful completion of the course, a course completion certificate for manual thermal cutters - oxy-acetylene cutting - is issued by the accredited TUV certification body, which is valid for 3 years. The certificate is issued in both Polish and English. The certificate entitles the holder to work with manual cutting devices using acetylene-oxygen and propane-oxygen torches. It is recognised in Poland and other EU countries. 

How does an oxy-acetylene torch work?

The purpose of gas welding is to heat the workpiece material to a sufficiently high temperature so that, with the help of an oxy-acetylene flame, the degradation process then takes place and the metal changes its state of aggregation. Using this method, it is possible not only to separate thick steel components, but also to join them permanently. The results obtained and the quality of the cut are strongly influenced by the choice of torch type. A small torch with a smaller stream should be used in order to obtain an adequate and high-precision cut. There are universal torches, which are suitable for both cutting and welding materials. It should be remembered that not all metals are suitable for machining with gas cutting. Metals suitable for processing with an oxy-acetylene torch are: 

  • cast iron, 
  • brass, 
  • titanium, 
  • tungsten, 
  • iron, 
  • bronze. 

Oxy-acetylene burners also perform well when machining structural, low-carbon, rust-covered and low-alloy steels.

Advantages and disadvantages of using an oxy-acetylene torch 

The main advantages of using an oxy-acetylene torch include: a very large cutting thickness range, good cutting quality on thicker materials, perpendicular cutting edges, the possibility of automation and cutting at various angles. On the other hand, the disadvantages include a large heat affected zone, inability to cut high-alloy and high-carbon steels, increased penetration time and low cutting speed.

Conditions for participation in training
