Crane - basic information

Basic information about cranes

Overhead cranes are devices used in short-term transport. They are classified as cranes. Cranes are lifting and transport devices that are designed to move various loads vertically / horizontally over short distances. The operation of cranes, including cranes, requires appropriate qualifications.

The work of the overhead cranes takes place in intermittent movement. The lifting and lowering mechanism in overhead cranes is operated by a winch (a tractor, in which a set of mechanisms is built on a separate supporting structure, which may be a frame) or a hoist (it has a compact structure).

The gantry cranes are made of:

  • supporting structure
  • trolley
  • the driving mechanism of the trolley
  • crane travel mechanism
  • lifting mechanism
  • electrical apparatus and installations
  • controls
  • cabins at cranes controlled from the cabin
  • safety devices

Overhead cranes are mainly used for the close transport of bulky and heavy loads.

Crane use places:

  • landfills
  • industrial halls
  • railway sidings
  • shipbuilding ramps
  • and other

To operate overhead cranes, it is necessary to have the relevant qualifications:

  • General-purpose cranes, hoists and winches
  • General and special-purpose cranes, hoists and winches

They are awarded after passing an examination before a board of the Office of Technical Inspection. Before taking the exam, an overhead crane course is recommended. It provides participants with comprehensive knowledge of how to operate the equipment and teaches them how to operate it safely.
